Physical Rehabilitation in Neurologic Disease

Veterinary patients experience a variety of neurological disorders. Some conditions are acute in onset and progress rapidly. A majority of others have a more insidious onset and gradual progression. Spinal cord trauma or an abrupt herniation of an intervertebral disk are examples of acute onset neurological pathologies requiring immediate medical attention. Degenerative myelopathy or lumbosacral disk disease are examples of the more slowly progressive disorders.
Just as in people, recovery from neurological disorders in our veterinary patients is frequently unpredictable and often quite prolonged. Rehabilitation is a very important part of managing acute or chronic neurologic disease. Through a variety of treatment interventions we can directly address the pain, weakness, deconditioning and diminishment of physical and mental quality of life most neurological patients experience.
