Dentistry

Your pet's health is directly affected by the condition of its teeth and gums. Imagine never brushing your teeth! Bacteria under the gums can spread via the blood stream to the vital organs such as the heart, liver, kidneys and lungs. Signs of poor oral health are:

  • bad breath
  • sensitivity around the mouth
  • loss of appetite/difficulty eating and chewing food
  • plaque and tartar
  • bleeding, inflamed or receded gums
  • loose or missing teeth

Home Care
Home dental care is recommended for all pets from the earliest age: brush daily with a pet toothbrush or finger brush and an approved pet toothpaste (rinsing is not necessary). Do not use baking soda or human toothpaste - they have ingredients which should not be swallowed. If your pet resists brushing there are other products such as oral rinses or gels available for home dental care. Please ask one of our technicians for advice.

Diet
Specially-treated dental chews and dry biscuits are good - but do not replace brushing.

Dentistry

Regular dental care, which includes ultrasonic cleaning and polishing, is performed by one of our specially-trained technicians. A short acting anesthetic is used allowing your pet to go home the same day.

Pre-Anesthetic Blood Testing
Prior to dentistry we require that your pet have a blood test to check liver and kidney function. These organs filter out the anesthetic agents and must be working properly for your pet to undergo any procedure requiring anesthesia.
